Setting the Properties of a Record Video Track

Before setting up events on a Record Video track you must define names for any output files and specify where they will be saved. You can also define the size and quality of video files as well as customise certain features of their layout and visual design, such as logos, titles, fonts and the background colour.

To set the properties of a Record Video track:

  1. Right-click on a Record Video track ‘header’ (in the area below the Playback toolbar) and select Track properties.

The ‘Properties’ dialog is displayed, open on the ‘Video file’ tab.

  2. Click the browse button to the right of the box labelled ‘Filename to save to’.

The Windows ‘Save As’ dialog is displayed.

    • Navigate to the location where you want to save the file.
    • In the ‘Save as type’ box, select either Video Clip (*.avi) or Motion JPEG, jpg Files (*.jpg, *.jpeg).
    • Enter a name for the video file and click Save.
  3. Select one of the Video size options:
    • Standard size – if you select this option, choose one of the standard screen resolutions from the associated drop-down list.
    • Custom size – if you select this option, enter the required dimensions in pixels (e.g. 800 x 600) and select one of the three aspect ratios, which define the relationship between height and width of the image: Free aspect, Lock aspect ratio to 4:3, Lock aspect ratio to 16:9.
  4. If you don’t want to change the layout of the video, proceed to the next step.

If you do want to change the layout, click the Layout button and see Customising the Video Layout.

  5. Select a codec from the Codec drop-down list (choose the one that best matches your installed software).
  6. Click and drag the Speed bar to specify the speed at which you want the playback to be recorded (the range is between 1x–real time and 30x–30 times real time).
  7. Click and drag the Video quality bar to set a value between 0 and 100 (100 being the best quality with the least compression). You may also select a predefined Quality setting from the drop-down list above the bar.
  8. Click OK to apply these settings.
